What is Smart and Skilled?
Smart and Skilled is a reform of the NSW vocational education and training system. It’s helping people get the skills they need to find a job and advance their careers.
Smart and Skilled provides eligible students with:
- An entitlement to government-subsidised training up to and including Certificate III
- Government funding for higher-level courses (Certificate IV and above) in targeted priority areas.

Eligibility Criteria
Are you Eligible?
To be eligible for NSW Smart & Skilled funding, prospective students must be:
- 15 years old or over, and
- no longer at school, and
- living or working in NSW (or an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person living in specific NSW border areas, and
- an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, Australian humanitarian visa holder or New Zealand citizen.
Previous qualifications do not affect your eligibility.
If you have a Certificate IV or higher qualification you are still able to access subsidised Smart and Skilled training up to Certificate III level, providing you meet the personal eligibility criteria for Smart and Skilled. As you already have a post-school qualification, you will pay a higher fee for your Smart and Skilled training than someone who does not have any qualifications.

Enrolment Process
- Complete Required Forms
- Unique Student Identifier (USI)
- Provide your USI to Unico Education Training.
- If you need assistance, authorise our staff by completing the USI application form (included in the enrolment form).
- Eligibility Evidence
- Submit proof of eligibility as per the Smart and Skilled Student Eligibility Policy.
- Submit Documents
- Fee Calculation & Eligibility Check
- Unico Education Training validates eligibility, calculates applicable fees and subsidies, and provides fee details.
- Student Confirmation
- By signing the enrolment form, you confirm all provided information is accurate and complete.
- Training Plan
- Provide your USI to Unico Education Training.
- If you need assistance, authorize our staff by completing the USI application form (included in the enrolment form).
- Submit proof of eligibility as per the Smart and Skilled Student Eligibility Policy.
Unico Education Training validates eligibility, calculates applicable fees and subsidies, and provides fee details.
By signing the enrolment form, you confirm all provided information is accurate and complete.
- Once enrolled, you will receive a Training Plan and can provide input.
- Trainer and staff contact details are included for further assistance.

How To Find USI
What is a USI?
A Unique Student Identifier (USI) is a reference number that helps students in Australia keep track of their training records and qualifications.
It is required for anyone enrolling in nationally recognised training.
How to Find Your USI
- Visit the USI Website
Go to the official USI website: https://www.usi.gov.au - Access the USI Portal
Click on the “Find my USI” option on the homepage. - Enter Your Details
You will need to provide some personal information, such as:
Your name
Date of birth
Email address
Any other identifying information as prompted. - Verify Your Identity
Follow the prompts to verify your identity. This may involve answering questions related to your training history. - Retrieve Your USI
Once your identity is verified, your USI will be displayed on the screen. Make sure to write it down or save it for future reference.
How to Create a USI
- Visit the USI Website
Go to the official USI website: https://www.usi.gov.au. - Access the USI Creation Page
Click on the “Create a USI” option on the homepage. - Provide Required Information
Fill out the online form with your personal details, including:
Your name
Date of birth
Address
Email address
Contact number - Set Up a Password
Create a secure password for your USI account. Make sure it meets the security requirements specified. - Submit Your Application
Review your information for accuracy and submit the application. - Receive Your USI
After submission, your USI will be generated. It will be displayed on the screen, and you will also receive a confirmation email. Save this information securely.
Tips for Managing Your USI
- Keep it Safe: Treat your USI like a password. Do not share it with anyone.
- Update Your Details: If your personal information changes, make sure to update your USI account.
- Check Your USI Records: You can check your training records by logging into your USI account.
